The Welsh Secretary has called on First Minister Carwyn Jones to follow England’s lead and make complementary therapies available on the NHS. He is to ask Carwyn Jones to support a pilot scheme. Not only will this lead to increased patient satisfaction but it will greatly lower the costs placed upon the NHS. The pilot scheme will be looking at the effectiveness of CAM for treating lower back pain.
I couldn’t agree more with Peter Hain, but why stop at just treating lower back pain? Whilst this is evidently a problem that needs solving (many people I know are on seemingly lifelong ibuprofen ) why stop there? I agree that acupuncture and chiropractic or osteopathy should be recommended to patients with lower back pain but there is so much more that all CAMs can offer.
Why not look at the results from the hugely successful Northern Ireland CAM pilot and introduce homeopathy, osteopathy, chiropractic etc. for many conditions. The Northern Ireland CAM pilot project showed that patients were benefitting from the use of these therapies in not only musculoskeletal ailments but also stress, depression and anxiety. So why not introduce more CAMs onto the NHS and satisfy the demands of the patients who want to see more choice and more importantly more long-term improvement in their health?
Indeed Peter Hain himself took his child to see a homeopath when he had eczema and asthma as nothing else was working and was delighted to see his son cured of these ailments with homeopathy. So why shouldn’t everyone have access to homeopathy?
